(Aizuwakamatu) Tsurugajo Castle

Tsurugajo is one of best-known historic castles of the Tohoku region, and during the Edo Period was home to the head of the Aizu clan. The interior of the castle was rebuilt in 1965 into a museum containing items used by the lords of the castle, and artifacts from the battles that accompanied the Meiji Restoration. The area surrounding the castle is a park and famous spot for cherry blossom viewing. Shoan, son of Sen no Rikyu, considered the father of the tea ceremony, helped to design the "Rinkaku" tea room in the grounds, and visitors can experience here part of the spirit of tea ceremony.

(Akitashi) Amasagi Village

Amasagi Village is a complete tourist center in Iwaki-machi, just south of the city of Akita. Centered around an historical facility, it houses thesamurai residence of the Unuma family (transferred from its original site), and a museum with collections of furniture and samurai armor.

Asamushi Aquarium (Aomorishi)

Nebuta Village (Aomorishi)

The summer is highlighted by the Nebuta Festival, one of Japan's three greatest fire festivals. Huge floats, called "nebuta", which are actually used in the festival, are exhibited here, recreating the excitement of the festival.

Hakkoda-maru (Aomorishi)

The Hakkoda-Maru served as the rail-sea link between Aomori and Hakodate for 80 years until 1987. Having completed its task, it is preserved at a museum open to the public.

Lake Hibara (bandai/Inawashiro)

The largest of the lakes on the Bandai Kogen formed by the eruption of Mt. Bandai. Measuring 10km north to south and 38km in circumference, the lake can also be enjoyed by sightseeing vessels or rowboats.

The Nakatsugawa Valley is a beautiful V-shaped valley with steep sides extending around 10km to the source of the Nakatsu River in the west of Mt. Azuma. A walkway of about a kilometer along the river bank provides visitors with glimpses of scenes straight out of a landscape painting.

Park containing ten buildings erected from the middle of the Edo Period through to the early Meiji Period and including a farmhouse in which the family raise silkworms, traveler's accommodation, ryokan/restaurant and small theater. A walkway around the park takes around 40 minutes to complete.

Esashi Fujiwara Heritage Park (Hiraizumi)

This theme park brings to life the Fujiwara clan, the family that brought prosperity to the town of Hiraizumi some 900 years ago. More than 100 Heian-style buildings have been constructed on the basis of historical investigations.
