Geibikei Gorge (Hiraizumi)

This scenic area is noted for its precipitous, 100-meter cliff. With its lovely wisteria flowers in spring, bright fall colors and dramatic winter snowscape, there is much to see. You can even take a ride on a traditional Japanese boat while the boatman's singing echoes along the walls.

Historical Western-style Buildings (Hirosaki)

Hirosaki's western-style building reflects other cultures introduced into Japan during the years following the Meiji Restoration, when many educators from abroad were invited to the city to teach. The former Public Library and the Aomori Bank Memorial Building are notable examples of the influence.

Tsugaru Neputa Village (Hirosaki)

Neputa is Hirosaki's main summer festival, which features large illuminated paper floats that parade through the city. A giant "neputa", which was used during the festival, is on exhibit at Neputa Village.

Fukuurajima Island (Matushima)

This island is home to a natural botanical garden where visitors can see 250 different species- -including red pine trees and firs- -as they stroll the promenade. There is also a small bay that's a habitat for various bird species and a wintering ground for swans.

Godaido Hall (Matushima)

The Godaido, which is perched on a small island in Matsushima Bay, has special significance for people throughout the area. Within the vividly- colored inside hall are the Godai Myoo Zo, five esoteric Buddhist statues.

Matsushima Orgel Museum Matushima
This museum houses 134 pieces of music boxes, or orgel, purchased from the National Museum of Belgium. The world's largest concert organ- -7 m high and 9 m wide- -is of particular note.
